What Is a Preventative Care Visit?

When you make an appointment at Hill Dental Studio, you’ll notice something different right away. It starts with a title, but it’s more than just a name. You see, at Hill Dental Studio, Dr. Hill and his staff don’t just give patients your standard, run-of-the-mill dental exam. We give you what Dr. Hill lovingly refers to as a “preventative care visit.”

So, what’s in a name? After all, putting a fancy title on a dental exam doesn’t mean it’s any better, right? But here at Hill Dental Studio, it really is. That’s because in addition to your typical cleaning and exam, Dr. Hill and his staff go above and beyond to offer our patients a thorough, in-depth exam that covers way more than just the basics.

Education and Home Care

Dr. Hill is a big proponent of education, especially educating his patients on how to maintain their own oral health at home. That’s because home care is an essential part of caring for your oral health. Dr. Hill and his team will make sure each patient knows how to brush their teeth properly, how to floss properly, how often to brush and floss, and even some things you can do throughout the day to keep your teeth feeling clean and safeguarding them from the bacteria and acids that accumulate as we eat throughout the day.

Sweat the Small Stuff

Have you ever heard that old adage “don’t sweat the small stuff”? Well, at Hill Dental Studio, we do sweat the small stuff. Why? Because it’s a whole lot easier to fix a problem when it’s still small than to wait until it’s gotten much bigger. That means if we spot a problem like a developing cavity or infection, we take a proactive approach to fix it now, rather than later. That doesn’t mean that when you come in we’re going to find 20 future cavities right away, but we’re also not going to ignore a potential problem and cross our fingers it goes away, either.

Visual Cancer Screening

Every patient Dr. Hill sees will not only get a one-on-one consultation with the doctor himself, but they’ll also get a thorough exam of the teeth, gums, jaw and lips. Dr. Hill screens each of his patients for oral cancer as part of their regular exam. With oral cancer rates skyrocketing around the world, this essential exam could save more than just your teeth, gums, tongue and tissue – it could save your life.

Checking the Jaw

Dr. Hill also takes the time to check each patient’s jaw as part of their preventative care visit. Does your jaw click or pop when you open it? Is it frequently sore? Do you experience jaw tightness? All of these are warning signs for conditions like temporomandibular jaw disorder (TMJ disorder), sleep apnea and teeth grinding (also known as bruxism). If Dr. Hill identifies a problem with the jaw, he can then develop a treatment plan that can correct the issue and alleviate any of the jaw pain or pressure the patient may be experiencing.
